Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ECONTROL® smart glass

Technology & Functionality

How does ECONTROL® glass work?

ECONTROL® uses electrochromic technology. When a low voltage is applied, ions move within the glass layers, changing the tint from transparent to opaque. The process is reversible and can be controlled with a simple switch, app, or building automation system.

How much energy does smart glass consume?

ECONTROL® glass consumes very little energy - only during the switching process (typically 2-5 minutes). Once switched, the glass maintains its state without any power consumption. Annual energy consumption is typically less than 1 kWh per square meter.

How fast does the glass switch?

The switching time depends on the glass size and ambient temperature. Typically, it takes 2-5 minutes to switch from transparent to fully tinted, and 3-8 minutes for the reverse process. Larger panes may take slightly longer.

What happens during a power outage?

ECONTROL® glass maintains its current state during power outages. If the glass was transparent when power was lost, it remains transparent. If it was tinted, it remains tinted until power is restored and a switching command is given.

Installation & Maintenance

Can ECONTROL® glass be retrofitted?

Yes, ECONTROL® glass can be retrofitted in many cases, depending on the existing frame system. Our technical team can assess your specific situation and provide recommendations for retrofitting options.

What maintenance is required?

ECONTROL® glass requires minimal maintenance - similar to regular glass. Clean with standard glass cleaners and soft cloths. Avoid abrasive materials. The electrical connections should be checked periodically by qualified personnel.

What is the lifespan of smart glass?

ECONTROL® glass is designed for a lifespan of 20+ years with normal use. The switching mechanism is tested for over 100,000 switching cycles, which covers decades of typical residential or commercial use.

Is special wiring required?

ECONTROL® glass operates on low voltage (typically 12-24V DC). Standard electrical wiring to a transformer is required. The system can integrate with building automation systems and smart home platforms.

Applications & Use Cases

Where can smart glass be used?

ECONTROL® glass is suitable for windows, doors, skylights, curtain walls, partition walls, and conservatories in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. It's ideal for offices, hospitals, hotels, homes, and any space requiring variable privacy and light control.

Is smart glass suitable for exterior use?

Yes, ECONTROL® glass is designed for both interior and exterior applications. It withstands weather conditions, UV exposure, and temperature variations. Special edge sealing ensures long-term durability in outdoor environments.

Can smart glass be curved or shaped?

ECONTROL® glass can be manufactured in various shapes and can be curved within certain parameters. Custom shapes and sizes are available to meet specific architectural requirements. Consult our technical team for complex geometries.

Cost & Warranty

What does smart glass cost?

The cost depends on size, quantity, technical specifications, and installation requirements. Generally, smart glass is 3-5 times more expensive than standard glass but offers significant long-term energy savings and added functionality. Contact us for a detailed quote.

What warranty is provided?

We provide a comprehensive warranty covering materials and functionality. The exact terms depend on the application and installation conditions. Typically, we offer 2-5 years warranty on the smart glass functionality and 10+ years on the glass structure.

Are there energy savings with smart glass?

Yes, ECONTROL® glass can reduce energy costs by 20-40% by automatically controlling solar heat gain and reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. The glass pays for itself over time through energy savings.
